Aussie Football League (AFL)

Learning more and more techniques every Thursday, Sam our AFL coach has been teaching us. Where? Well we had to play on the hardcourt. This is a great game to play. If it wasn’t for Kiwi Kick we wouldn’t of had our session and experience the time that we spend doing AFL.

Randomly, Room 21 messily walked towards the hardcourt to learn a new technique. Sam taught us a strategy called “Handball”. This particular technique is really simple... well that’s what I thought. My opponent was Mrs Lagitupu then Mrs Haapala, they were both good. I was looking for a strategy to pass or handball the ball to my opponent straight.

Suddenly there was a sound, a sound that was really loud and what  was the noise? It was a whistle. Everyone knew what that meant, and it meant moving on to the next activity.  Rules had filled everyone’s head as though they were traumatised. These rules seemed simple, but some kids had broken the rules.

Last game of the session was octopus. Instead of  the teachers touching us with their hands they had to handball the ball and hit us with it. Most times it was easy to dodge. Trying to find the right moment to run I realised that there were heaps of people in. Eventually I got out.

This activity made me realise that I had to get outside more. Sports like these have provided us to learn more skills and strategies in the future. I’m considering playing sports now.

Toanga Time

Although I’ve missed a week worth of experience with my group that Team 5 had been split up into on Friday afternoon. There were a range of options to choose from. Apparently I was only allowed in 1 group and that was Mr Jacobsen’s music group.

Looking at the list I saw my brother’s name. “Oh no!, this is going to be difficult because sometimes my brother can annoy me” I thought to myself as I left the classroom. Lining up getting ready for my first lesson I felt frustrated because I didn’t know what to do. Walking towards the music room I was starting to shake, I guess that was very silly of me because I’ve been at this school for 8 years.

Listening to the instructions I thought it was pretty easy but once I went to the computer I felt blank. But then I got the hang of it. Two projects had to be finished, I completed it in 1 whole day which was good. Even though I’ve only did 2 projects this is the most I did accomplished in a year, even though it was very simple.

Heading back to class I wondered what next project are we doing next Friday?. Is it going to be simple or hard? Asking all these question made me feel dizzy. Luckily I was prepared for it, although I didn’t have medication to take. I had to just think ahead and try not to be sick on the last day of school.

Compare and Contrast Picasso's 'The Weeping Woman' and and Daniella Hulmes 'A lazy day in paradise'.

This week Rm21 has been assigned another compare and contrast task but with two different artists. The two different artists are Pablo Picasso and Daniella Hulme.  Daniella Hulme’s artwork style is contemporary. Even though her heritage is Dutch, her famous painting style came from her husband who  is Samoan. Pablo Picasso’s style of art is Cubism. Weird artwork fills the wall that is painted by his particular hands. His style to me looks creepy. Lucky I don’t have any paintings of his on my wall just in case I feel creeped out.

I think that Picasso’s painting ‘The Weeping Woman’ is weird and ugly. The shapes and lines are crammed into one picture. Random colours also fill the painting. The woman in the painting has upset feelings. I know this isn’t supposed to be realistic.  Sadness conquers the painting. Looking at other perspectives this might have been what Picasso was feeling or was it? According to the research, a person named Dora Marr is the woman that Picasso had drawn. This painting was created in 1937.

‘A Lazy Day in Paradise’ is a beautiful and graceful painting. That is what I describe as a perfect picture. Bright colours and pretty patterns all over the painting, made me feel like I was in the islands or back in Rotorua. Looking at the woman that Daniella Hulme had drawn, her face looks nearly realistic. It was made in 2008. She used oil painting and the theme was Pacific Island.

Trying to discover the differences between Pablo Picasso “ The Weeping Woman” and Daniella Hulme’s “ A Lazy Day In Paradise”, I finally noticed that there are plenty of differences like colours, looks and perspectives. Picasso uses weird colours and Daniella Hulme uses bright colours, thats the first difference.  Of course another difference is the looks which are Picasso’s ugly and weird painting and Hulme’s graceful and relaxing painting. They both have different themes. Picasso has a probably a sad theme and Hulme’s theme is actually Pacific Island
Although there are heaps of differences, I guess their artworks are amazing, but sometimes Picasso’s paintings can freak me out. They’re both great artists in their own way. Picasso with his weird unusual artwork and Hulme with her Pacific artwork. I guess it was their gift to do art.

Comparing and Contrasting

Room 21 had to compare and contrast two different artworks. The artworks are Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ and Henri Matisse’s ‘La Musique’ which means ‘The Music’. Van Gogh’s style of art is Expressionism. Henri Matisse’s style is Fauvism which means ‘Wild Beast’. Henri Matisse is famous for the way he uses colours and patterns. Vincent Van Gogh wasn't famous until he died, well thanks to his sister-in-law for convincing people to buy and be interested in his painting.

Looking at the sunflowers that Vincent Van Gogh created, it has a very bold colour. The colours he mostly used were yellow and brown. The type of technique he used was dabs and small brush strokes. Yellow represents the full bloom and brown represents the wilting and death. Droopy and dullness had described the wilting death.Looking among the sad artwork made me look miserable because looking at it could make anyone sad.

Looking among the artwork that Matisse had painted. He used different types of patterns and different colours. Patterns and colours collide into a beautiful artwork. The painting has two ladies. One is playing the guitar and the other is listening while sitting on something like a bean bag. The type of art is an oil painting art. It cost heaps of money. I notice that he used green, blue, red and yellow. He used black outlines. I just noticed that it remind me of an an relaxing day at the beach or even at home.

Looking at the differences and similarities, there ain’t that much of them. There are only two similarity which is, they both have plants and they both had yellow. The differences between the ‘Sunflowers’ and the ‘La Musique’ is the yellow represents the full bloom and the brown represents death. The differences between the ‘La Musique’ and the ‘Sunflowers’ is that the La musique has two ladies in it, one is playing the guitar and the other is sitting on something like a bean-bag and relaxing. Of cause Henri Matisse used lots of bright colour and plenty of patterns.

In conclusion I think that, although they are both great artist they have different types of backgrounds. Before Matisse became an artist he studied law. Henri Matisse died of a heart attack at the age of 84 on November 3rd 1954.  Van Gogh had a tough life. He died at the age of 37 in 29 July 1890, the cause of it was shooting himself in his chest on the field while painting. The bullet deflected off his ribs going right through his chest not damaging one single internal organ. He died 29 hours after he shot himself.

Art Alive week rotation

Back to school...great! In Term 2 our topic is Art Alive.  Pt England school is learning about different artists and the types of art they do. Team 5 had an immersion rotation to learn about different artists and the technique they use. Each teacher in Team 5 had an artist to focus on.

On Monday afternoon everyone had to stay in their own class to learn about the particular artist that their teacher has picked. First my class, Room 21 had to learn about an artist called Henry Matisse who was born on 31 December 1869 at Cateau- Cambresis in France. He liked to use lots of bright colours, different shapes and different patterns. The style that he used was Fauvism which means ‘Wild Beast’ One of his paintings were of his wife. I guess he painted her because he loved her so much. As soon as he got old he started to do cut-outs which was easier because he was in a wheelchair. He also believed that colours could heal people. He passed away on 3rd of December 1954 because of a heart attack at the age of 84.

The next day was another rotation in Mrs Nua’s class. We were learning about Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zunder on 30th of March 1853 and died on 29 July 1890.The style that he used was Expressionism. People say that he accidentally chopped off his ear, which is true, but they say he put it in a box and sent it to his girlfriend?. He was a person that haven’t become a famous artist until he died, which was in 29th of July 1890. How did he get famous? Well his sister-in-law convinced people to buy his painting. But the only painting that he sold when he was alive was one, which was only worth $1,000 grand. He had a mental illness and gave his bloody cut ear lobe to a woman that he knew. HIs life to me was really strange. If I was in a situation like that all I would do is be calm and probably pray. But apart from all that, he had a real tough life.

The next rotation was with Mr Barks, but I didn’t go because I was away.

On Friday afternoon room 21 had to move onto the next rotation. The class we had to go to was Room 19. We learned about a man called Claude Monet. He was born on 14 November 1840 on the 5th floor of 45 rue Laffitte, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. He died of lung cancer on December 5th 1926 at the age of 86 and is buried in Giverny church cemetery. Randomly sitting and painting, Room 21 was allowed to paint any picture we wanted to, as long as we did brush strokes or dabs. Mr Slade wanted to call it dots but then he didn’t. Claude Monet was a impressionist artist. In that class most of us got paint on our uniform, even on our faces. It was pretty funny. Some of us called it paint fight. It didn’t really matter because it was friday the last day of the school week.
